Recent Interviews
This section highlights original, recent interviews with leading jazz musicians and jazz educators who have worked with Jamey Aebersold on the Aebersold Play-A-Longs, and continue to use them in their practice and teaching.
These new interviews explore the remarkable history of the Aebersold Play-A-Longs—the majority of which were recorded in a makeshift studio in Aebersold’s basement in New Albany, Indiana— and explain why they endure as an important teaching and practice guide for jazz students and jazz artists worldwide.
Steve Allee has worked with Slide Hampton, Rufus Reid, Bob Mintzer, Phil Woods, Curtis Fuller, Jeff Hamilton and Milt Hinton, among others.
Randy Brecker is a legenday jazz trumpeter and composer who has worked with artists including Steely Dan, Frank Sinatra, Jaco Pastorius and Bruce Springsteen in his four-decade career.
Jerry Coker added to jazz pedagogy by publishing some 20 books on jazz, most of which are still in print. He held jazz faculty positions at Indiana University, Duke University, Sam Houston State University, Miami University, and University of Tennessee, where he taught for two decades.
Todd Coolman has enjoyed a long career as a jazz musician and jazz educator. He played with the James Moody Quartet for 25 years, and performed/recorded with many jazz greats including Horace Silver, Stan Getz, Benny Golson, Art Farmer, and the Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra.
Matt Eve has been working with Jamey Aebersold and his Play-A-Longs business for over 40 years, starting when he was still in high school.
John Goldsby has been a member of the world-renowned Westdeutscher Rundfunk Big Band (WDR Big Band) in Cologne, Germany since 1994. He also records and performs with his own ensembles there. Before moving to Germany, Goldsby was active in the New York City jazz scene from 1980-1994.
Dan Haerle is well represented on Aebersold’s Play-A-Longs, appearing on 18 recordings, including standards, blues and tributes to jazz legends Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Rollins and Bill Evans.
Pat Harbison is Professor of Jazz Studies at Indiana University, a position he has held since 1997. He graduated from the University of Louisville and received his Masters from the University of Indiana, where he studied with renowned jazz educator David Baker.
Jim Ketch is Professor Emeritus of Music and Director of Jazz Studies at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, where he taught for 40 years. He participated as a faculty member at the Aebersold summer jazz workshops for 20 years.
Pat LaBarbera is a well-known saxophonist who has played with Elvin Jones, the Buddy Rich Band, Woody Herman, Louie Bellson and his own groups. He taught at Skidmore College in New York and Humber College in Toronto. He was a faculty member at Jamey Aebersold’s summer jazz camps for nearly 20 years.
One of the best known and highly regarded jazz bassists of the past half-century, Rufus Reid appears on 14 Play-A-Longs. He also taught at Aebersold’s Summer Jazz Workshops for 45 years as a faculty member.
Lynn Seaton is a Professor in the Jazz Studies Division of the College of Music at the University of North Texas. Seaton played on seven Aebersold Play-A-Longs, including Billy Strayhorn “Lush Life”, “Giant Steps Jazz Standards in All Keys,” and Horace Silver “Shoutin’ Out.”
Ed Soph is Regents Professor Emeritus of Drumset at the University of North Texas. He was Professor in the Jazz Studies and Performance Divisions of the College of Music at North Texas from 1987-2017. Soph recorded 11 Aebersold Play-A-Longs, including “Burnin’: Up Tempo Jazz,” and “Tune Up: Standards In All 12 Keys.”
Dave Stryker has recorded 30 CDs as a leader, the most recent of which is “Baker’s Circle,” honoring jazz educator David Baker, who, along with Aebersold, was an early, earnest advocate of jazz studies. Stryker also played with saxophonist Stanley Turrentine’s band from 1986-1995.
Michael Tracy is Director of the Jamey Aebersold Jazz Studies Program at the University of Louisville School of Music in Louisville, KY. He has been responsible for organizing and coordinating all educational programs and activities at Jamey Aebersold’s Summer Jazz Workshops since the mid-1970’s.
